Where These Numbers Come From
In 2009, Battelle Memorial Institute ran a controlled 90-day lab study for the Water Quality Research Foundation and Water Quality Association, testing 30 water heaters (gas storage, electric storage, and tankless gas) side by side on softened and unsoftened water. The study measured actual thermal efficiency, scale accumulation, and service life for each group, then published life-cycle cost savings by hardness level.
A few of the study's findings, quoted directly:
- Gas storage water heaters on unsoftened water built up scale at about 528 grams/year, versus 7 grams/year on softened water.
- Electric storage water heaters on unsoftened water built up scale at about 907 grams/year, versus 14 grams/year softened — though the study measured no difference in electricity use between the two groups.
- None of the water heaters on unsoftened water made it through the full testing period without clogging; every water heater on softened water did.
- Tankless gas water heaters on unsoftened water needed deliming after as little as 1.4 years of equivalent service at 30 GPG hardness, and their average efficiency dropped from 80% to 72% before that deliming.

Why hardness matters here
Calcium and magnesium in hard water precipitate onto hot surfaces inside a water heater, forming scale that insulates the heating element or burner from the water — the heater works harder for the same result.
It affects more than the heater
The same study found low-flow showerheads and faucets on unsoftened water clogged within days of accelerated testing, while dishwashers and washers on unsoftened water showed noticeable scale after just 30 days.
This is a real reading, not marketing math
Every figure in this calculator is copied from the study's own tables. We don't use it to imply your specific hardness — most South Florida utilities don't publish a number, which is exactly why a free water test matters.
