Instead of treating water at one sink or shower, it conditions everything that flows through your plumbing — so every tap, every appliance, and every irrigation zone gets water that's already been filtered or softened.

Sizing a whole-home system starts with two numbers: your water test results and your home's peak flow rate — the maximum gallons per minute your plumbing might see with multiple fixtures running at once (a shower, a dishwasher, and an irrigation zone, for example). Undersized equipment restricts flow and underperforms exactly when demand is highest; oversized equipment costs more without added benefit. Getting this number right is a matter of counting fixtures and bathrooms, not guessing from square footage.

From there, each stage is sized independently. A sediment pre-filter's micron rating and cartridge size are chosen based on how much particulate your test showed and how quickly that would clog a smaller unit. A carbon stage's contact time — essentially, how long water spends in contact with the carbon media — is set based on your specific disinfectant type and level, since chloramine typically needs more contact time than free chlorine to reduce effectively.
